The Maker’s 5-Step Guide to Google Business Success
Setting up your Google Business Profile is the best way to make sure local customers find you when they search for "laser gifts," "custom woodworking," or "local engravers."
Here is how to get it done in 15 minutes!
Step 1: Claim Your Spot
Go to google.com/business and sign in with your business Gmail account. Search for your business name—if it doesn’t pop up, click "Add your business to Google."
Step 2: Define Your Service Area
Do you have a physical shop? Enter your address.
Do you work from home? You can hide your home address and instead select a "Service Area" (e.g., your city and surrounding counties). This is perfect for makers who do local pickup or delivery.
Step 3: Choose Your Category
This is huge for SEO! Use specific categories like:
Laser Cutting Service
Gift Shop
Engraving Services
Step 4: The "Photo Dump" (The Fun Part!)
Google profiles with photos get 35% more clicks. Upload:
A high-res photo of your logo.
3-5 photos of your best work (that bubble brittle or those laser-etched signs!).
A photo of yourself in your workspace to build that personal connection.
Step 5: Verification
Google will usually send a postcard with a code to your address to verify you are a real local human. Once that code arrives (usually in 5 days), enter it, and you are officially "on the map!"
Pro-Tips for 2026:
Keep it Digital: Even if you sell physical goods, you can link your Shopify "Digital Files" section directly in your profile posts.
The Review Loop: Every time you finish a local order, ask for a Google Review. High ratings are the #1 way to move your business to the top of the search results!
