LightBurn 2.1 is Here: Why the New Cuttle Integration is a Game Changer
If you spend any amount of time running a laser engraver, you already know that LightBurn is the gold standard for control software. With the recent release of LightBurn 2.1, the team has rolled out a massive update packed with performance boosts, multi-camera support, and neat new design tools. But there is one specific feature tucked into this update that is an absolute game-changer for laser owners: Direct integration with Cuttle.
If you are tired of downloading, unzipping, and dragging SVG files across your desktop just to cut a customized nameplate or a perfectly sized box, this update was made for you. Here is everything you need to know about the new LightBurn and Cuttle integration and how it will speed up your workflow.
What Exactly is Cuttle?
For the uninitiated, Cuttle (cuttle.xyz) is a web-based, 2D vector editor built specifically for digital cutting machines like lasers. While traditional design software like Illustrator or Inkscape is great, Cuttle specializes in parametric design.
In simple terms, parameters are numbers you can adjust on the fly—like material thickness, kerf, or the dimensions of a box. When you change a parameter or type a new name into a template, the entire design mathematically updates in real-time to fit. Cuttle offers a massive library of community and premium templates that make creating customized, perfectly fitted files incredibly fast.
How the Integration Works
Before LightBurn 2.1, the workflow looked like this:
- Open Cuttle in your browser.
- Customize your template.
- Export and download the SVG file.
- Find the file in your downloads folder and import it into LightBurn.
The LightBurn 2.1 workflow:
LightBurn and Cuttle have partnered to bring the Cuttle interface directly into your LightBurn workspace. You can now browse and customize Cuttle templates without ever leaving your laser software. Once your design is ready, you simply click Send to LightBurn, and the vectors immediately appear on your canvas, ready to be assigned to your cut layers. No file juggling required.
How to Use Cuttle Directly Within LightBurn
Getting started is incredibly simple. Just follow these steps to link the two platforms:
- Update LightBurn: First, ensure you are running version 2.1 or newer. You can check this by going to Help > Check for Updates in the LightBurn top menu.
- Locate Web Tools: Once updated, look for the newly added Web Tools menu in the top navigation bar.
- Launch Cuttle: Select Cuttle from the Web Tools menu. A window will pop up allowing you to sign in to your Cuttle account and browse templates.
- Customize: Pick a template, adjust your text, change your material thickness, and tweak the settings until it looks perfect.
- Send it Over: Click the Send to LightBurn button. The interface will close, and your fully formatted vectors will drop right onto your LightBurn workspace.
⚠️ A Quick Tip on Kerf Settings
Because both programs are incredibly smart, they can sometimes step on each other's toes when it comes to kerf compensation.
Many of Cuttle’s parametric templates (like slot-together boxes) allow you to input your laser's kerf directly into the template so the joints fit tightly. If you do this in Cuttle, make sure your kerf offset in LightBurn’s Cut Settings Editor is set to 0. If you apply kerf compensation in Cuttle and add a kerf offset in LightBurn, your laser will double-compensate, resulting in pieces that won't fit together!
Ready to Cut?
Our goal is always to spend less time clicking around on a computer and more time actually making things. The LightBurn 2.1 update streamlines the custom design process beautifully. If you haven't updated your software yet, now is the time to do it and give this new integration a spin!

100% transparency: I get 25% of whatever people sign up for whether it's yearly or monthly.
It is the only other software other than Lightburn that I feel good promoting. I am not a great salesperson. 🤣🤣
